One of the most anxiety-fueling things about a job interview is the fear of the unknown. It doesn’t have to be that way, though, as job seekers can count on certain questions being asked in almost every interview. Here are six of the most popular, along with some tips on how to answer them. Â
1. What Are Your Weaknesses? Â
This may be the most dreaded interview question of all. Think about answers that minimize your weakness and emphasizes your strengths. Stay away from personal qualities and concentrate on professional traits. And be sure to list steps you’re taking to address your weakness. For example, you could mention joining Toastmasters to improve your communication skills. Â
2. Why Should We Hire You? Â
The most effective answers to this question point to the experience and accomplishments that make you a good fit for the company. Think of it as presenting a case for yourself, and be prepared with evidence of your value. Â
3. Why Do You Want to Work Here? Â
An interviewer asking this is listening for signs you’ve given this some thought and aren’t just sending out resumes to any company with an opening. For example, be prepared to talk about how the company’s mission statement lines up with your values. Â
4. What Are Your Goals? Â
Resist the temptation to wander into the weeds with vague, long-term aspirations. Instead, focus on specific short-term and intermediate SMART goals. Â
5. Why Did You Leave (Or Why Are You Leaving) Your Job? Â
You can earn professionalism points by avoiding trashing your former employer. Instead, place your departure in a positive context. If you’re employed, focus on what you want in your next job – without mentioning you’re not getting it at your current one. Â
6. What Salary Are You Seeking? Â
Before the interview, research the going rate for the job title in your area, and have an idea of the lowest amount you’d accept. Once you’re in the interview, try to get the employer to tell you a salary range first. Â
